DAVOS, January 22. /TASS/. China calls for a political settlement of the months-long Ukrainian crisis and pledges to continue playing an active and constructive role in such efforts, Chinese Premier Li Keqiang told the Ukrainian leader on Wednesday.

“China adheres to an objective and just stand on the Ukraine issue,” Xinhua quoted Li as saying when meeting with Petro Poroshenko on the sidelines of the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland.

The Chinese premier said since China and Ukraine established diplomatic ties, the sides have respected and treated each other equally, and their cooperation has achieved fruitful results.

“China will always respect the national sovereignty, independence and territorial integrity of Ukraine and support the Eastern European nation to adopt a path of development in accordance with its national conditions,” he said.

Beijing will “continue to carry out pragmatic cooperation with the Ukrainian side on the basis of win-win and mutual benefit,” he said.

President Poroshenko said Kiev hopes that China will play “a more active role in the political settlement of the Ukraine issue.”

Ukraine attaches great importance to its relations with China and seeks to maintain cooperation with Beijing, he added.

The Ukrainian presidential press service said at the meeting in Davos on Wednesday, the Ukrainian president and the Chinese premier also agreed to start implementing the agreements on a bilateral currency swap of 15 billion yuans ($2.41 billion) which had been signed earlier.
