Both sides in Ukraine conflict commited war crimes — Amnesty International chief

The official said that both sides have used mortars and rockets with high level of civilian casualties, which needs further investigation

LONDON, February 25. /TASS/. Possible weapons supplies to Ukraine could create the risk of using them for the new human rights abuses, Secretary-General of Amnesty International Salil Shetty said in an interview with TASS on Wednesday.

"We have been very clear that any delivery of weapons has to first go through a careful testing to see whether it would be used for further abuse for human rights," Shetty told a TASS correspondent.

The Amnesty International chief said there is real risk that the arms could be used for human right violations. "In the case of the Ukrainian conflict we feel that both sides have extensively committed war crimes which needs further investigation," he said.

Both sides used mortars and rockets with high level of civilian casualties, he added.

"Amnesty International experiences that arms are a very little solution. The long-term solutions really deal with underlying problems, why this conflict took place in Ukraine, which are its causes," Shetty said.

The Amnesty International also said it its report published on Wednesday that "both sides failed to take reasonable precautions to protect civilians, in violation of the laws of war."

Since April, the conflict in eastern Ukraine has killed nearly 5,800 people, including 63 children, while another 14,595 people have been wounded, according to the latest United Nations figures.
