North Korea’s lawyers urge UN to cancel human rights abuses resolution

North Korea’s Democratic Lawyers Association reminded that North Korean defector Shin Dong-hyuk, a key witness to the UN inquiry, later changed his story and apologized

PYONGYANG, January 31. /TASS/. North Korea’s Democratic Lawyers Association has called on the United Nations to abolish the resolution on alleged human rights violations in Pyongyang saying it is based on "false testimony."

The association said that the UN did Washington’s bidding by approving the resolution in December and reminded that North Korean defector Shin Dong-hyuk, a key witness to the UN inquiry, later changed his story and apologized.

The testimony was however included in the UN investigative report on which the UN General Assembly resolution is based. Therefore, the association says the UN should "apologize for supporting the US anti-Pyongyang plot and cancel the resolution on the human rights abuses in North Korea."

The lawyers say the global organization should take an unbiased stance on human rights and must not support Washington’s hostile policy against North Korea that is aimed at casting a slur on the country’s reputation on the international arena.

North Korea’s mass media call Shin Dong-hyuk a criminal, who left the country to avoid punishment for the rape of a girl. The defector, the author of Escape from Camp 14, recently acknowledged that some details of his book contradict reality.
