MOSCOW, January 27. /TASS/. At least one civilian has died and 17 have been wounded in shelling of the eastern Ukrainian city of Donetsk, local media reported quoting the city mayor's office.

Shelling by heavy artillery around the city of Donetsk continued throughout the night and into the early hours, officials said, adding that the situation there remained tense as of 10:00 local time.

Many buildings in the district revealed the intensity of overnight shelling. Residents in the northern part of the city had been left without water and regular supplies of electricity after power supplies were hit by shelling.

Ukraine’s armed forces shelled Donetsk residential areas and suburbs more than 50 times over the past 24 hours, said local defense ministry spokesman Eduard Basurin.

A total of 28 shelling incidents had been recorded overnight and some 56 over the past 24 hours, the Donetsk news agency quoted Basurin as saying, adding that some 36 buildings had been destroyed in the self-proclaimed Donetsk People’s Republic.
