At least 12 killed in Egypt revolution anniversary clashes

30 others were injured

CAIRO, January 25. /TASS/. At least 12 people were killed and more than 30 others were injured in and outside Cairo as Egypt marked the fourth anniversary of revolution on Sunday, the country’s health ministry said.

According to the ministry, nine people were killed in fierce clashes in Cairo’s suburb Matariya, including a conscript soldier and a child from a Christian family.

Supporters and opponents of Egyptian President Abdel-Fattah el-Sisi earlier faced off outside the Journalists Syndicate in downtown Cairo.

The relatives and supporters came there to condemn Saturday’s killing of socialist activist Shaimaa al-Sabbagh when security forces dispersed a protest in the capital city.

The crowds accused police of using force weapons the protesters, while the Interior Ministry rejected the claims. Others believe the activist was shot dead in a provocation.

Another 12 Islamists who had tried to provoke unrest were arrested near Tahrir Square, which became the symbol of the 2011 uprising.

Police said 10 explosive devices have been defused. In one of the provinces, activists of the banned Muslim Brotherhood group who carried several explosive devices were detained.

Sunday marks the fourth anniversary of the country’s revolution that led to the ouster of longstanding president Hosni Mubarak, who had ruled Egypt for three decades.
