Driver says passenger bus near Ukraine’s Volnovakha was hit by fragmentation mine

“The checkpoint was shelled from Grads,” the driver noted

KIEV, January 19. /TASS/. The driver of a passenger bus that got into a deadly incident killing 13 and wounding 16 civilians near the town of Volnovakha in eastern Ukraine said on Monday the bus had been hit by a fragmentation mine.

“There are more mines at the checkpoint. It was a mine, a fragmentation mine,” the man said in an interview with the Ukrainian news portal Korrespondent, adding that the checkpoint had been shelled from Grad multiple rocket systems. “The checkpoint was shelled from Grads. But should it be a Grad shell I wouldn’t be speaking with you,” he noted.

The tragedy in the city of Volnovakha, some 60 kilometers to the southwest of Donetsk, occurred on January 13, when a bus was hit by a shell, killing 13 civilians and wounding at least 16 others. Kiev insists that the bus was shelled by Donetsk militias from multiple launch rocket systems. The self-proclaimed republic’s leadership denied its involvement in the attack, saying the tragedy was the result of Kiev’s provocation.
