“No one should hope that this country will be thrown on the sidelines of global development as a result of what is happening now,” Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev said

MOSCOW, December 23. /TASS/. Russia will not be kicked aside the global development due to the sanctions introduced by Western countries, Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev said on Tuesday.

“No one should hope that this country will be thrown on the sidelines of global development as a result of what is happening now,” Medvedev told a meeting of Supreme and General Councils of the ruling United Russia party. Russia will never become a “rogue state,” Medvedev stressed.

The prime minister reminded that sanctions against Russia have been already introduced in the past, but these measures have never produced the expected results.

Medvedev gave an example of China, which was repeatedly slapped with sanctions, including for dispersing the Tiananmen Square protests in 1989. “And where is China now, and where those sanctions are?” he asked.

“Sanctions never result in anything. And we should brace up and do what our fathers and grandfathers did in the previous century and what other successful countries did,” he said. “And we will do so,” he said.

Russia has come under Western sanctions, originally visa bans and asset freezes and later sectoral restrictions amid the Ukrainian crisis. In response, Moscow imposed on August 7 a one-year ban on imports of beef, pork, poultry, fish, cheeses, fruit, vegetables and dairy products from Australia, Canada, the EU, the United States and Norway.
