Poroshenko: Kiev ready to begin decentralization of power in Ukraine

“Today, communities want to live in a different way and have more competences. We are ready to begin the process of decentralization of power,” he said

KIEV, December 7. /TASS/. Ukraine’s authorities are ready to begin the process of decentralization of power in Ukraine, President Pyotr Poroshenko said on Sunday.

“Today, communities want to live in a different way and have more competences. We are ready to begin the process of decentralization of power,” he said in a greeting message on the occasion of the Day of Local Self-rule.

“The necessity of such changes is becoming more evident as election of rural and city heads and local legislatures are approaching,” he noted. “But lawmakers elected by communities must be prepared to receive, along with broad competences, great responsibility for the life and development of their territories.”

“The level of the standards of governance in cities, villages and towns, the quality of the fulfillment of liabilities, self-reliance and the observance of the principle of self-government of communities will depend on the honesty, enthusiasm and initiative of members of local self-governments and lawmakers of local legislatures,” the president stressed.

The Day of Local Self-rule has been marked in Ukraine since 2000 “to stress the significance of local self-government in the development of democracy and consolidation of the statehood.”.
