German foreign minister does not see Ukraine on way towards NATO

“For me, Ukraine’s membership in the North Atlantic Alliance cannot be on the agenda. Anyway, I cannot see Ukraine on the way towards NATO,” he said

BERLIN, November 30. /TASS/. The question of Ukraine’s joining NATO is not on the agenda, Germany’s Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier said in an interview with ZDF television channel.

“For me, Ukraine’s membership in the North Atlantic Alliance cannot be on the agenda. Anyway, I cannot see Ukraine on the way towards NATO,” he said.

The minister continued saying: “I am for transparency in this matter, as, I believe, it would not be helpful if we do not speak about it.”

It is necessary “to remain realists.”

“We are in the centre of a dangerous conflict,” the minister said.

The situation in Ukraine leaves much to be desired, but at the same time further escalation remains possible, he said. Thus, it would be necessary to explain to the public regarding which questions we should rather “not add fuel to the fire,” Frank-Walter Steinmeier said.
