Russian Foreign Ministry protests defilement of WWII memorial in Sofia

The vandals drew the Ukrainian flag on the inscription at the stele’s foundation and painted one of the sculptures yellow and blue - the colours of the Ukrainian flag

MOSCOW, February 24. /ITAR-TASS/. Russian Foreign Ministry has expressed outrage at another act of vandalism committed against the memorial to the Red Army in the Bulgarian capital Sofia.

“We were deeply indignant at the news of another act of vandalism against the World War II memorial in the center of the Bulgarian capital Sofia at night on February 23,” goes the Foreign Ministry’s comment.

The Foreign Ministry has referred a letter of protest with a demand for a thorough investigation into “this act of hooliganism”, for bringing those responsible to justice and putting the memorial in order. The Russian Foreign Ministry hopes Bulgaria will “take all necessary measures to prevent mockeries of the memory of Soviet soldiers who sacrificed their lives for the liberation of Bulgaria and Europe from Nazism”.

The memorial in question was desecrated on the Defender of the Fatherland Day celebrated in Russia and some former Soviet republics on February 23. The vandals drew the Ukrainian flag on the inscription at the stele’s foundation and painted one of the sculptures yellow and blue - the colours of the Ukrainian flag.
