Saakashvili speaks at Independence Square in Kiev

KIEV, December 07, 22:00 /ITAR-TASS/. Georgia’s former president, Mikhail Saakashvili, addressed the pro-European protesters on Kiev’s Independence Square on Saturday, voicing support for Ukraine’s course towards European integration.

“Nothing can prevent our common aspiration of freedom,” Saakashvili said in his speech. He added that the Ukrainians had made the right choice in favor of pro-European integration.

In July 2010, Saakashvili, who was then the president of Georgia, personally congratulated Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovich on his 60th birthday. Their meeting passed in warm and friendly atmosphere. Now, Saakashvili has jumped the trail and has joined those demanding a change of power in Ukraine.

In the meantime, Georgian Foreign Minister Maya Pandzhikidze told journalists that the former president was certainly free in his actions but none of his remarks, speeches or other actions reflected the position of the Georgian government on various issues.

The ruling Georgian Dream coalition, the incumbent prime minister and parliamentary leaders have been reacting with reserve to the current events in Ukraine, treating them as an “internal affair of a sovereign state.
