DOHA, January 28. /TASS/. Authorities of Qatar are likely to allow temporary distribution of alcoholic beverages in specially designated areas for the duration of the FIFA World Cup, which the Arab state will be hosting in 2022, a source in the local organizing committee of the world championship, told TASS on Wednesday.

Distribution and consumption of alcohol in Qatar is prohibited by the law with the exception of specially designated bars located in selected hotels across the country. If residents obtain a special license they can buy alcoholic beverages in a government-managed store in Doha. It is also prohibited to bring alcohol to Qatar from abroad.

The source told TASS that consumption of alcohol is not a part of culture in Qatar, however, alcoholic beverages will be available in some places during the 2022 World Cup. He added that details would be announced in the run up to the World Cup.

In an interview with Associated Press last November, Qatar's Sports Minister Salah bin Ghanem bin Nasser Al Ali said that a "creative" solution needed to find a balance between his country’s cultural values and FIFA’s requirements.

"As we bid for 2022, we will respect all the rules and regulations by FIFA. We can study this and minimize the impact on our people and tradition. I think we can be creative, finding solutions for all of this. But we respect all the rules and regulations," he was quoted by AP as saying at that time.
