MOSCOW, January 21. /TASS/. Russia’s president has not been formally invited to attend the Auschwitz events, but Russia will be certainly represented there, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said on Wednesday at a news conference on the results of 2014.

According to Lavrov, although the Russian president has not officially been invited to the events to mark the 70th anniversary of Nazi death camp’s liberation, “Russia will certainly be represented there, as we will never forget these tragic and at the same time heroic pages of the World War II history.”

On January 27, 1945, Soviet troops liberated prisoners of concentration camps in southern Poland. More than 200 Soviet soldiers and officers were killed in the battles for freeing the death camp and neighbouring town Oswiecim.

The UN General Assembly instituted the International Day of Remembrance for Holocaust Victims.
