Last Sobibor death camp survivor dies in Russia

Alexey Vaitsen took part in the uprising of Sobibor prisoners in 1943 known as one of the two successful revolts at Nazi death camps

RYAZAN, January 15. /TASS/. The last-known living survivor of the Sobibor death camp has died at the age of 92 in the city of Ryazan, central Russia, the head of the local Jewish cultural center said on Thursday.

Alexey Vaitsen who lost all his family in Nazi death camps during World War II will be buried on January 16, Lyudmila Zakharova said.

Vaitsen took part in the uprising of Sobibor prisoners in 1943 known as one of the two successful revolts at Nazi death camps. After the war, he appeared as a witness in the trial of Sobibor commanders.

At least 250,000 people were murdered in Sobibor located in eastern Poland.
