Alexey Navalny’s defense appeals house arrest after suspended sentence

According to the lawyer, a protest will be presented after January 12, when all parties have the full text of the verdict

MOSCOW, December 31. /TASS/. The defense lawyer of Russian opposition activist Alexey Navalny has appealed against the decision to keep him under house arrest after the court passed a suspended sentence.

“I have filed a protest against the decision to keep in effect such a restrictive measure against Navalny as house arrest until the just-pronounced suspended sentence takes effect,” Navalny’s lawyer, Vadim Kobzev, has told TASS.

Kobzev said the sentence itself had not been appealed yet. According to the lawyer, a protest will be presented after January 12, when all parties have the full text.

“To protest a sentence one has at least to be able to read it in full. The protest will be lodged only after the court’s verdict has been studied,” he said.

On Tuesday, a Moscow court found the Navalny brothers guilty in an Yves Rocher fraud case. Alexey Navalny was sentenced to three and a half years in jail, but suspended the punishment, while his brother, Oleg, was given a real three-and-a-half-year term in an ordinary security penitentiary. Also, the court levied a four-million ruble compensation the brothers will have to pay the Multi-Profile Processing Company featuring in the case and a fine of 500,000 rubles on each.
