Ukraine reopens border with Crimea for passenger cars

“By 16:00 hours Moscow Standard Time, the border was reopened for the cars arriving from Ukraine at the Armyansk and Perekov crossing stations,” a spokesman for the Crimean customs service said

SIMFEROPOL, December 27. /TASS/. Ukraine has reopened the border with Crimea for the passenger cars bound for destinations in the peninsular republic.

“By 16:00 hours Moscow Standard Time, the border was reopened for the cars arriving from Ukraine at the Armyansk and Perekov crossing stations,” a spokesman for the Crimean customs service said.

“The Ukrainian side on Saturday stopped letting passenger cars though the Armyansk and Pepekov border stations,” he said. “In the wake of the move, queues of people compelled to leave their vehicles /on the Ukrainian side of the border/ and to cross over to Russia on foot formed at the checkpoints.”

The people wishing to get to Crimea, which reunited with Russia in March 2014, had to abandon their cars on the Ukrainian side of the border and to walk across the border to the Russian checkpoints.

Along with it, the cars moving from Crimea to Ukraine passed border formalities at the Russian checkpoints without any impediments, but inspection at checkpoints on the Ukrainian side of the border was still highly impeded.

All in all, three automobile and three railway crossing stations are functioning at the Crimean section of the Russian-Ukrainian border. Saturday’s problems affected two of them.

The passage of cross-border traffic at the Dzhankoi checkpoint was normal.
