Russia’s bilateral agreements with Abkhazia should not be subject of discussion at UN

UNITED NATIONS, December 22 /TASS/. A Russian-Abkhazian Treaty on Allied Relations and Strategic Partnership should not be discussed at the United Nations Security Council because it is a subject of bilateral relations, Pyotr Ilyichev, Russia’s Deputy Permanent Representative to the United Nations, told the final meeting of the U.N. Security Council on Monday.

During the U.N. Security Council meeting, diplomats from the United States, Lithuania and Britain condemned the Russian-Abkhazian treaty, which, they said, was violating Georgia’s sovereignty and was posing a threat to regional security.

“As for the Russian-Abkhazian Treaty on Allied Relations and Strategic Partnership, it fits in well into bilateral treaties concluded with that independent state (Abkhazia). Therefore, this issue should not be a subject for discussion at the United Nations Security Council, Ilyichev said.

Earlier on Monday, the Abkhazian parliament ratified the new Treaty with Russia by 23 votes with five votes against.

Abkhazian politician Raul Khadzhimba submitted the document for ratification on December 8.
