Active phase of anti-terrorism operation ends in Grozny

The Anti-Terrorist Committee reported earlier on Thursday that ten policemen had been killed and 28 had been wounded during a security operation in Grozny

MOSCOW, December 4. /TASS/. The active phase of an anti-terrorism operation has ended in Chechnya's capital Grozny, the National Anti-Terrorism Committee said.

The bodies of eight militants believed to have attacked a traffic police checkpoint in Grozny early on Thursday and 24 explosive devices have been found during the active phase of a security operation, the committee told TASS on Thursday.

"The active phase of a security operation in Grozny is over. All militants were eliminated. Firearms, grenades and munitions, as well as 24 makeshift explosive devices ready for use, were found at the Press House and School No.20,” the Anti-Terrorist Committee went on to say.

At the moment, law enforcers continue searching the site. Bomb disposal experts are clearing the territory from bombs and mines.

Police are trying to identify the dead gunmen and are checking their possible complicity to other terrorist crimes.

A group of unidentified gunmen moving in three cars attacked a traffic police checkpoint in Grozny in the early hours on Thursday. After that, the terrorists sneaked into the local Press House where the editorial offices of the republic’s newspapers, Internet publications and federal media outlets are located. Chechen law enforcers blocked the Press House building and launched a security operation in central Grozny.
