Russia's actions aimed at political settlement of Ukrainian crisis — Public Chamber member

Speaking about sanctions the West might impose against Russia, the expert pointed out that Russia should not fear any sanctions because it is a large country

MOSCOW, March 04. /ITAR-TASS/. A Russian Public Chamber member said the actions taken by Russian authorities to stabilize the situation in Ukraine are aimed at a political settlement of the crisis in that country.

“President Vladimir Putin is obviously bringing a political settlement of the Ukrainian crisis closer,” Public Chamber member Sergei Markov said in comments on the head of state's news conference earlier in the day.

Markov believes that forming a democratic coalition government with representatives of all parliament factions could be such a solution. The second condition is to hold a democratic election, free from the terror of neo-Nazi gangs. “This means they should be dissolved,” he added.

A democratic Constitution is the third condition. That is, the Constitution should spell out the rights of Russian-speaking population. Russian should be a second state language, he went on.

Speaking about sanctions the West might impose against Russia, the expert pointed out that Russia should not fear any sanctions because it is a large country.

“Russia has all the necessary natural resources, it has a large territory. Russia has powerful allies. In a long-term outlook, these sanctions will hurt western countries more than Russia,” Markov said.

On the United States' freezing military contacts with Russia, the Public Chamber member expressed the opinion that they would resume after the end of the Ukrainian crisis. “All informed people in the West know that Russia is 100 percent right in this Ukrainian conflict," he said.
