Russia's Leviathan nominated for Academy Award as best foreign film

The film won the Golden Globe Award for the best foreign language film on January 12

LOS ANGELES, January 15. /TASS/. The 87th Academy Award has nominated Russia’s Leviathan by director Andrey Zvyagintsev for an Oscar in the Best Foreign Language Film category.

This was announced at a ceremony in the Samuel Goldwyn Theater in Los Angeles where the nominees’ names were made public.

The film won the Golden Globe Award for the best foreign language film on January 12.

Leviathan, named after Thomas Hobbes's great work, is the filmmaker’s interpretation of the Bible story of Job based on the modern Russian reality. The film is set on a peninsula by the Barents Sea and tells the story of a man struggling against a local corrupt mayor.

The movie premiered at the 2014 Cannes Film Festival in May and won the award for Best Screenplay. It also won the prize at the 32nd Munich Film Festival in the best foreign film category.

Other contenders for the Academy Award's best foreign-language film are the Polish film "Ida" by Pawel Pawlikowski, Mauritanian director Abderrahmane Sissako's "Timbuktu," Argentine filmmaker Damian Szifron's comedy-drama movie "Wild Tales" and "Tangerines," an Estonian-Georgian film by Zaza Urushadze.

The winners of the 87th Academy Awards will be revealed at Hollywood's Dolby Theatre on February 22.

Zvyagnitsev told TASS he was feeling nothing but joy and happiness following the Oscar nomination.
