VENICE, June 08 /ITAR-TASS/. A Pavilion of the Antarctica for first time ever begins working at the Venice Architecture Biennale (La Biennale di Venezia). The exposition of the 14th forum is located Playground 14-second account of the forum in the palace of the Fondaco Marcello on the Grand Canal. The event’s Commissioner is Russian artist Alexander Ponomarev.
“The principles of cooperation and life in the Antarctica offer a unique precedent where people of different nationalities live and work together creatively,” Ponomarev said. “The pavilion accumulates and presents approaches, strategies and talents, declaring abilities for civilization interaction with space and with each other.”
It is highly symbolical, that the status of the pavilion is defined as transnational.
Curator Nadim Samman joined in the exposition called Antarctopia works by architects and artists from different countries - Yuri Avvakumov, Alexander Brodsky, Marcel Dinae, Mariel Noydeker, architectural firms Zaha Hadid / Studio Hadid Vienna, Hugh Broughton Architects and others.
The project’s participants present their concepts of development of the continent and of its future. Models of architectural structures are placed in black transport cases, which are usually used to transport musical equipment. They are advantageously combined with the white interior of the pavilion, and visitors focus only on the works themselves.
For example, Alexey Kodyr and Ilya Babak presented a project of an Arctic greenhouse called Polar Poppy. The authors proposed creation of an artificial ecosystem with polar plants, which can become the basis for technical and scientific developments in the fields of botany and medicine, and which also may be used as lounge area.
Austrian Studio Hadid Vienna demonstrated a project of transforming Antarctic Research Centre. Its purpose, the authors say, is to study the spectrum of architectural qualities for research centres and it is an attempt to combine the capabilities of the environment and its biodiversity.
And Alexander Zelikin explored the aesthetic properties of icebergs and ice. The author has created a model - an abstract composition, where he demonstrates maps, diagrams, and visualizations, which illustrate locations of the ice floes, their projections and the degree of visibility at different times of day. In his turn, Alexander Brodsky has offered a model of a pavilion to play chess in that southern continent of the Earth.
As organisers say, the Antarctic Pavilion will be the first step towards organisation in 2015-2016 of the Antarctic Biennale, which will be held on board research vessels and which will promote cultural exchange between artists and scientists.
Curator of the 14th la Biennale di Venezia, Paolo Baratta, has chosen the title for the 14th International Architecture Exhibition, which is Fundamentals. “Fundamentals will be a Biennale about architecture, not architects. After several Biennales dedicated to the celebration of the contemporary, Fundamentals will focus on histories - on the inevitable elements of all architecture used by any architect, anywhere, anytime (the door, the floor, the ceiling etc.) and on the evolution of national architectures in the last 100 years. In three complementary manifestations - taking place in the Central Pavilion, the Arsenale, and the National Pavilions - this retrospective will generate a fresh understanding of the richness of architecture’s fundamental repertoire, apparently so exhausted today.”

The main project of the 14th Architecture Exhibition is located traditionally at the complex of the Arsenale and 66 national pavilions occupy the urban spaces.
