Medvedev endorses draft nuclear plant construction agreement with Jordan

The agreement was drafted by Russian’s state nuclear corporation Rosatom with due account of Russia’s international liabilities and in line with Russia laws

MOSCOW, December 25. /TASS/. Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev has endorsed a draft Russia-Jordan agreement on the construction and operation of a nuclear plant in Jordan, the official government’s website said on Thursday.

In January 2011, Jordan announced a tender for a turn-key construction of its first nuclear-powerd electricity plant. In October 2013, Russia’s Atomstroiexport was named as a contender of choice for the construction of a nuclear plant of two energy units with a capacity of 1,000 megawatts each. Under the construction schedule, the first energy unit is to be put in operation in 2024, and the second one in 2026.

The agreement was drafted by Russian’s state nuclear corporation Rosatom with due account of Russia’s international liabilities and in line with Russia laws. Thus, the draft provides that nuclear fuel supplied by Russian authorized organizations is to be taken back to Russia when used. Apart from that, the agreement binds Jordan not to use nuclear materials, equipment and technologies received under it to manufacture nuclear weapons or other explosive devices or in any other purposes.

Medvedev vested Rosatom and the Russian Foreign Ministry with the authority to conduct talks with Jordan and sign the agreement.

According to the government’s release, the implementation of this agreement will positively affect the development of Russia’s nuclear energy sector and will ensure long-term contracts to sectoral enterprises.
