Russian fisheries: new rules for industry's new horizons

Improved conditions for the Russian fishing industry would stimulate exports and create more jobs - head of Russia's veterinary service

MOSCOW, January 20. /ITAR-TASS/. Russia's fishing industry and the national veterinary service are charting a course towards "order and transparency at the markets” and developing advanced fish processing technologies.

Improved conditions for the Russian industry would stimulate exports, create more jobs and ensure "that we process what we export today,” Sergey Dankvert, head of Russia’s Federal Service for Veterinary and Phytosanitary Surveillance (Rosselkhoznadzor) told Itar-Tass on Monday.

New procedures for issuing veterinary documents for Russian fishery products could enhance transparency in the fishing industry so "it will be clear how much fish was sent for export and how much remained in Russia,” he said.

Dankvert spoke after discussions with the new head of Russia’s fisheries agency Rosrybolovstvo, Ilya Shestakov, after a Russian delegation's presence at the International Green Week fair in Berlin.

“We discussed the possibilities of establishing order and transparency at the fish market,” Dankvert said, noting that the authorities wanted to draw up general guidelines to develop advanced fish processing technologies in Russia and adding that “Rosrybolovstvo’s new leadership should continue building refining capacities on Russian territory”.

Granting veterinary documents to Russian fishermen would soon be considered separately by state bodies, he said.

Russian Deputy Agriculture Minister Ilya Shestakov was appointed Rosrybolovstvo's new chief on January 17, 2014 during the Russian delegation’s work at the Berlin fair, led by Russian Agriculture Minister Nikolai Fedorov.

Shestakov told journalists he would take up his duties with Rosrybolovstvo from January 20, 2014.
