Russia, US say violation of nuclear non-proliferation unacceptable - Lavrov

“The unilateral American sanctions against Syria and Iran will continue gaining an extra-territory character,” Sergei Lavrov said

VLADIVOSTOK, September 8 (Itar-Tass) —— The objectives of the Russian Federation and those of the United States of America on Syria and Iran are similar, however Moscow does not support the American policy of threats and new sanctions, Russia’s Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said on Saturday.

“During the meeting with Hillary Clinton, we discussed the situation around Syria and Iran,” he said. “We share similar objectives in both cases.”

“We want Syria to be a free, politically booming country so that it had a government elected by the nation and which would reflect interests of all people living in Syria, including ethnic religious groups,” Lavrov said. “As for Iran, neither for us nor for the US acceptable is violation of the nuclear non-proliferation regime. We shall do everything not to let it happen.”

“As for methods of achieving the goals, with the US prevailing are tendencies for threats and bigger pressure, for new sanctions against both Syria and Iran,” the foreign minister said. “We do not agree with this, as it is necessary to involve in settling a problem, not to isolate from it.”

“Above all, the unilateral American sanctions against Syria and Iran will continue gaining an extra-territory character, affect directly interests of Russian businesses, Russian banks for example,” Lavrov said. “We have voiced that this approach is unacceptable, and we were heard, though I do not know what the result will be.”
